John 20:26-27 says, “And after eight days his disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, ‘Peace to you!’ Then he said to Thomas, ‘Reach your finger here, and look at my hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into my side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.’” Eight days after his first appearance to the disciples, Jesus appears again. Only now is Thomas with them. Jesus quotes Thomas’ words after the disciples told him they saw Jesus. He wasn’t there when Thomas said them. Jesus hears everything without being present. And he was neither offended nor angry with him. Thomas needed evidence, not a rebuke. Jesus first appeared with Thomas gone so this encounter would help others like him who need evidence to believe. Remember this the next time an outsider is weak in faith.
