John 18:28 says, “Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium, and it was early morning. But they themselves did not go into the Praetorium, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover.” John skips Jesus’ trial at Caiaphas’ house (Matthew 27:57-68) where the Sanhedrin condemned him to death. Satisfied with their verdict, the Jews took him “to the Praetorium,” where the Roman military governor Pontius Pilate stayed during feast days like Passover to prevent unrest. The Jews did not enter this Gentile building “lest they should be defiled,” forbidden from any holy day participation without ritual cleansing first. But condemning Jesus was much worse. Jews only had religiosity — trying to keep the law. Josh McDowell says, ‘Rules without relationship leads to rebellion.” Jews had rebellion down completely. Let’s not measure ourselves today by rules and rebel but rejoice in our relationship with God.
