John 17:13 says, “But now I come to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves.” Jesus continued praying in the garden as Judas and the temple guards made their way there. After saying he kept his disciples except Judas (v. 12), he says why: “that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves.” His joy comes up more frequently in his last night with them than any other time. He wants his joy in us to be “full” (15:11), to follow “sorrow” (16:20), and to “remain” (16:22). Within minutes their world will explode with Christ’s arrest and all that followed. Definitely the hardest time in their lives. But the fruit of the Spirit is “love, joy” and the rest (Galatians 5:22). Let’s keep our eyes on the Giver of joy (Romans 15:11) to have it fulfilled in us today.
