John 16:23-24 says, “And in that day you will ask me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you. Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.” Shortly before Judas comes to betray Jesus in the garden, he was concluding his instructions to the disciples. Things would change about how they prayed. “In that day” spoke about his departure to heaven when they could “ask nothing” being absent. While they were with him they didn’t need to ask “in [his] name” because he was present. But not for long. After Pentecost when the Spirit came they would “ask in [his] name” that their “joy may be full.” Fullness of joy is linked to answered prayer in Jesus’ name to bring the kingdom. Let’s always pray for that.
