John 16:4b-6 says “ And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you. But now I go away to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.” Still trying to bolster his disciples in Gethsemane, Jesus hadn’t told them some things “at the beginning” because they were in his presence. Now he’s preparing them for his absence. At the last Passover (13:36, 14:5) they asked where he was going but not now. Their hearts were heavy with “sorrow,” thinking of life without him. They never got the big picture. They misunderstood the prophecies of his resurrection. That’s what happens when our view is only on ourselves. Even with Jesus still with them they were grieved! Let’s understand the big picture and live in the resurrection today.
