John 14:27 says, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” The Last Passover meal was ending. Jesus wanted them to be reassured in light of what was soon coming. All Jews knew what “peace” was. In Hebrew it’s shalom, the state of well being, calm, prosperity and security. Israel enjoyed so little of this in her long history. It describes the nature of the messianic kingdom. Jews used it to say hello and goodbye. The “world” offers a very cheap imitation of it. The world’s peace never lasts. But the peace Jesus leaves is meant to keep our hearts from being “troubled.” Jesus was troubled 3 times (11:33, 12:27, 13:21) so we wouldn’t be. Let’s let God’s shalom daily rule our hearts.
