John 13:34-35 says, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” Judas had just left the Last Passover meal when Jesus gave this “new commandment.” This commandment wasn’t completely new: the Old Testament already contained it (Leviticus 19:18, Deuteronomy 6:5). But it was new in manner and capacity: “as I have loved you,” and to be done in the power of the Spirit. Love is the hallmark of Jesus’ disciples, the ‘final apologetic’ theologian Francis Schaeffer said. Judas was incapable of loving others since he only loved himself. As our supreme example Jesus gave up everything for us. May “all” outsiders around us not only hear that love from us but also see it active in us today.
