John 12:32-33 says, “And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to myself.” This he said, signifying by what death he would die.” Early in Passion Week Jesus began giving clues about his impending death: a seed that falls into the ground that dies (v. 24), and hating his life in this world (v. 25). He does the same here by him being “lifted up from the earth…signifying by what death he would die.” Obviously this was crucifixion — nailed to a cross and lifted above the ground for all to see. Because of his willingness to do this for us (saving us) and his Father (glorifying him), he “highly exalted” Jesus with “a name which is above every name” (Philippians 2:9). If we follow his example, God will honor us in heaven too. Always remember: the way down is the way up!
