John 11:34-36 says, “And he said, ‘Where have you laid him?’ They said to him, ‘Lord, come and see.’ Jesus wept. Then the Jews said, ‘See how he loved him!'” Jesus asked where Lazarus was laid to rest. The professional mourners said they’d show him. Then “Jesus wept.” This means teared up, not wailing like Mary and the others were doing (different Greek word). He probably did so fully feeling the pain and suffering of people’s sin, death and grief. When the Jews saw his tears they said, “See how much he loved (phileo) him!” This was brotherly love, not unconditional committed love (agape). The Jews, like us, typically understood things from their earthly perspective, not God’s. Jesus was going to raise Lazarus for God’s glory (v. 4). Not even Mary or Martha expected that. Do we look beyond surface events of life to detect God’s purposes and glory?
