John 10:27-28 says, “ My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of my hand.” This is not a ‘p.s.’ following Jesus’ shepherd and sheep metaphor, which was spoken weeks earlier. He says his sheep “hear” his voice. This means to listen with intent to respond, to learn from. It’s not the, ‘I heard it but wasn’t paying attention’ kind of hearing. Those who “hear” are Jesus’ sheep and thus the recipients of “eternal life” who will neither “perish” nor be snatched out of his hand. “Snatch” means take by sudden force, which also describes the Rapture of the Church (1 Thes. 4:17). No one is stronger or faster than Jesus! Since we’re always in his hand, let’s help outsiders understand that what we enjoy can be theirs today.
