John 8:28 says, “Then Jesus said to them, ‘When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father taught me, I speak these things.'” Jesus still is speaking to the Jews at the Temple. The conversation is getting tense. He gives them an outcome scenario based on his coming crucifixion, described as lifting up the Son of Man (see 3:14, 12:32). As a result — what the second then means — they will know he is God on earth in human form. When will they know it? Either when they trust him or they die and realize too late they should have trusted him. To do this, the Father taught Jesus. Imagine that: Jesus the student. How good are we as his student-disciples? Are we teachable like him? How can we improve our teachability today?
