John 5:19 says, “Then Jesus answered and said to them, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of himself, but what he sees the Father do; for whatever he does, the Son also does in like manner.'” It may surprise us that by himself Jesus can do nothing, but it’s true. Though he was God’s Son, he was completely dependent on the Holy Spirit’s power to do anything (Isaiah 11:2, Matthew 12:18, 28, Acts 10:38, etc.). He also had a view of God none of us ever have in this life. What the Father does, Jesus does. And that’s one reason why he came: for us to see what he did and follow his lead. The same Holy Spirit who empowered him empowers us. That’s why he said (15:5), “Without me you can do nothing.” No Jesus who sees the Father, no Holy Spirit to empower. Keeping our eyes on Jesus is the only way to go.
